Tonight I opened my bottle of Widmer Brothers Lemongrass Wheat Ale and had it with a slice of lemon pie made by The Missus. As part of their reserve series, the beer is the fall 2011 release. Beer Advocate has an overall rating of C+ as of today.
I wasn’t blown away by the beer. Having had one other lemongrass beer I could vividly remember, this didn’t stack up. The label says the beer was brewed with muscat grape juice, which I could definitely tell and wasn’t crazy about. Drinking the beer with the lemon pie evened it out more – it canceled the grape taste a little and let me get more of whatever lemon was in the beer. Overall, it tasted like a generic Belgian with some extra flavors thrown in. Having gone through all the Wider Bros Reserve Series beers from the last couple years, this brew doesn’t rate highly among them. It was just OK and I don’t feel the need to spend another $10 on a bottle.
Having said all that, I did have a great experience with another beer tonight – Founders Harvest Ale. Beer Advocate has an overall rating of A- for this one: This was the first time I’ve had Harvest Ale, although I think I’ve liked everything of Founders I’ve had. Great hoppy flavor and not dry at all. Granted, it should be that way by virtue of the wet-hop brew. I’ll definitely miss it when my four-pack (now three) is gone. A great one-at-a-time brew.
