This one’s from the local Roth Brewery, which sits somewhere amongst the Durham/Raleigh netherworld border. I haven’t had many of their beers, but like the ones I have tasted. This is their Sex Viking Dunkelweizen, which is currently unrated on Beer Advocate.
With a name like “Sex Viking,” you can’t lose, right? Apparently it was voted as the name from a survey. Seems about right. Doesn’t hurt the marketing.
That said, I wasn’t really crazy about the beer. Maybe I expected too much? It’s a pretty good lawnmower beer, actually. The mouthfeel is pretty thin and light and it lacked a discernible smell. When I drank it cold, there didn’t seem to be a lot of flavor to it, either.
However, as it warmed, the beer’s caramel malt started to come through along with hints of fruit and banana. While it doesn’t make me sing its praises, Sex Viking is still a decent, light German-style beer. Probably not something I would go out of my way to drink, but certainly very drinkable. If nothing else, I’m glad I tried it.
